Stump Grinding in Casselberry
A stump left in the yard keeps causing trouble. It trips people, dulls mower blades, sprouts suckers and draws termites as it rots. We grind it below grade, take care of the surface roots around it and tell you up front what the job involves.

What Stump Grinding Does and When It Makes Sense
Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning carbide-toothed wheel to chew the stump into wood chips, a few inches at a time, until it sits below the soil line. Pulling a stump out whole tears up a large patch of yard. Grinding leaves the main root system in the ground to break down slowly, which is fine for most homes.
It is the right call when you want to mow straight across the spot, lay sod, extend a bed or put in a patio. If a tree came down years ago and the stump is already soft, grinding still finishes the job faster than waiting for it to rot. Oaks and other hardwoods common around Central Florida can take a decade or more to break down on their own.
If we also took the tree down, you can have the stump ground the same visit. We handle that work on our Tree Trimming and Removal and Palm Tree Pruning and Removal pages.
What's Included When We Grind a Stump
- Utility locate before we dig
- We have underground lines marked through Sunshine 811 before grinding starts. Irrigation lines are not marked, so we ask you where your sprinkler pipes and heads run.
- Grinding below grade
- We grind the stump several inches below the soil line, deeper if you plan to plant or lay sod there. We agree on the depth with you before we start.
- Surface root grinding
- Roots that snake across the lawn get ground out where they break the surface. We tell you which ones are worth chasing and which are best left alone.
- Your choice on the grindings
- The chips can backfill the hole, go into your beds as a rough mulch or be hauled away. Fresh wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so we recommend topsoil if grass is going over the spot.
- Cleanup
- We rake the area, blow chips off walkways and driveways and leave the yard tidy.
Signs It's Time to Grind That Stump
New shoots keep coming up
Some trees, like laurel oak and camphor, send up suckers from the stump and roots. Cutting them back only buys a few weeks.
Mushrooms or soft, crumbling wood
Fungus means the stump is rotting. That is when it starts drawing termites and wood-boring insects, and you don't want them near your home.
You mow around it every week
A stump forces awkward passes, leaves uncut grass at its base and costs blades when someone clips it.
It's in the way of a project
New sod, a bed, a paver patio or a fence line all go in more cleanly once the stump is gone.
Kids or guests trip on it
Low stumps hidden in tall grass are an easy fall, especially at dusk.
What Moves the Cost of Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is priced by the job, not guessed at over the phone. We look at the stump and tell you the price before any work starts. These are the things that move it.
Diameter at ground level
We measure across the widest point, including the root flare. A wide flare can make a stump much bigger than the trunk looked.
Wood type and age
Dense hardwoods like live oak grind slower than pine or a palm stump. A freshly cut stump is tougher than one that has been softening for years.
Access to the stump
A stump behind a fence, on a slope or wedged against a slab may need a smaller machine and more time.
Number of stumps
Several stumps in one visit cost less each than separate trips.
Roots and haul-away
Chasing surface roots and removing the grindings add time and are priced separately so you can choose.
How Stump Grinding Day Goes
- 1
Free estimate and walkthrough
We look at the stump's size, the roots and how we get the grinder to it. You get a clear price and a straight answer on whether grinding is your best option.
- 2
Locates and setup
Once lines are marked, we set the grinder up and put a debris screen in place near windows, cars or your home's siding when the stump is close.
- 3
Grinding
Most residential stumps take well under an hour of grinding. Large oaks with wide root flares take longer, and we'll tell you that ahead of time.
- 4
Backfill and cleanup
We fill the hole the way you chose, rake it level and clean the surrounding area before we leave.

Stump Grinding Questions
How deep do you grind?
We grind several inches below the soil line for most stumps. If you plan to plant something or lay sod right there, we can go deeper. We'll agree on the depth before we start.
Will the roots keep growing after the stump is gone?
Most trees stop once the stump is ground, and the roots slowly rot underground. A few sprouting species may push a shoot or two afterward. Cutting those back for a season usually ends it.
Can I put grass right where the stump was?
Yes, but not on straight wood chips. We pull out most of the grindings and fill the spot with topsoil so new sod roots properly. Our Sod Installation service can handle the patch.
Will the grinder damage my lawn or irrigation?
The machine leaves some tire marks that recover in a few weeks. Sprinkler lines are the real risk, so we ask where yours run and work carefully around them. If a line is in the root zone, we tell you before we grind.
What happens if something gets damaged during the work?
You're covered. We are a family-owned company, business licensed and fully insured. To keep it from coming to that, we set a debris screen near your home's windows and vehicles whenever a stump sits close to them.
